Principles of gene editing

This practical is aimed at second year undergraduate students. Whilst it is probably of most interest to those that are doing a molecular biosciences degree, it might be of wider interest because of the subject matter (gene editing).

Students would need a basic background in molecular biology and molecular biology techniques, including basic DNA biology (base-pairing, 5’ and 3’ orientation), use of plasmids, and PCR. This practical builds on lecture material that covers CRISPR in bacteria, but this could be incorporated into the background information for the practicals instead.

Helpful, but not essential, background knowledge / skills would be a basic knowledge of microbial handling and sterile technique.

We are currently developing this practical to include introduction of the GFP gene instead of antibiotic resistance, which will be more visually appealing. Please get in touch if you are interested.
