How to use this book

This resource is intended to be accessed by staff in the process of planning their teaching – NOT directly by students. You are free to change anything you like to suit your situation; we just ask that you give appropriate credit, by including the original authors’ names somewhere in your final materials. If you do decide to use this practical, please let us know about it by filling in this short form – it’s not a requirement but we’d love to hear how our ideas are being used!

For each practical, we have provided the following sections:

  • Introduction and context. This should help you decide if the practical could be useful for you and whether you want to read the rest of the chapter.
  • Student-facing resources. These are intended for you to copy and paste into your preferred platform and edit to suit your needs. At the very least you will probably want to add information such as where to find things in the lab. We’ve tried to mark things that will need to be changed using [square brackets]
  • Technical information. This is intended to support whoever is in charge of setting up the practical and generally includes details of the reagents and equipment that we provide, which you can adapt to suit your needs. In some cases there are contact details so you can obtain specific reagents.
  • Resources for teachers. This includes any extra material that might help you if you decide to use the practical. This could include model results; notes that we provide to demonstrators; advice and common problems to look out for; etc.

At the end of the book you can find some safety information for various protocols. We would typically include this in the student-facing documents at relevant points; you may have another system.

This book was first published in January 2025. We will record any subsequent changes here.
