Inferential Statistics

Although there are many different types of statistical analyses, we have only covered a handful that are likely to be taught in the first year of a Psychology undergraduate degree.

Much like the rest of this guide, we cover only how to conduct the analyses rather than how to interpret them. You will be presented with a parametric and non-parametric equivalent test for all sections in this Chapter apart from the last section where it is not relevant.

1. Independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U – compare the difference in the means of two independent (between-participants) groups.

2. Paired t-test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks – compare the difference in the means of two paired (within-participants) groups.

3. Pearson and Spearman Correlations – assess the relationship between two continuous variables.

4. Chi-squared Test – assess the relationship between two categorical variables.
